About the artist: Avalon began life as a string quartet, formed when four musical friends decided to meet and play on a regular basis. A common interest in the folk and traditional music of Ireland and beyond led them to team up with traditional musician Brendan Monaghan for a performance at the Fiddler’s Green International Festival in Rostrevor, County Down. Their aim is to explore links between the music of different traditions and cultures, both classical and traditional.
The name Avalon was arrived at with the help of the late Tony McAuley, musician and BBC producer, who was a firm friend and colleague. Avalon is a legendary Island somewhere in the British Isles, said to be where King Arthur is buried – or possibly only sleeps, to awaken at some future time. The word ‘Avalon’ may be an Anglicisation of the Celtic word ‘Annwyn’, which is the realm of the fairies or the netherworld.
